Living In A Tin Can -- The Full-Time Airstreaming Lifestyle

I know that I've been gone for a while -- my mother passed away on June 6th, and I've been absolutely overwhelmed dealing with everything. I'm just about ready to return to my normal life, and that means that my blogs will be returning too. I look forward to reconnecting with my site visitors -- keep an eye out for me in late September!

You Are Here:   Home > We Came, We Saw Blog

Matt and I have been full-time RVers since July of 2008 -- and each day brings a new life lesson (help, I'm growing, and I can't stop!) We are having a wonderful time, and wish that more people would break free from the shackles of stationary life to join us (Kendra and Doug, if you're reading, this means you!) This weekly blog shares our experiences living the nomadic life -- tips about the mechanics and practicalities of full-timing, obstacles we had to overcome to be able to travel year-round, what it's like to work on the road, and our observations about the world as we see it from our Airstream...

Why I Will Never Own A Huge Freaking Motorhome

When other RVers see our teeny little Airstream, they say, "Oh, how nice, how cute, how wonderful -- for now." They view our tin can as nothing more than a rolling "starter" home. They assume that if we are going to continue on for years as full-timers, we will eventually want to upgrade to a larger rig -- a motorhome. Wrong! (And for all my motorhoming friends, let me apologize now, I'm an Airstream snob and I admit it!)

Staying Cool When Your Home Has No Insulation

People who live in houses and apartments take for granted the idea that they will be able to stay cool in 90+ degree weather -- crank up the A/C high enough and you might need a sweater indoors when it's sweltering outside! But when you live in an Airstream, you have to take other steps to beat the heat -- especially when your goal is to live in greener and more energy efficient way.

Organized Summer Fun When You're Full-Timing

For those living the stationary life, summer means swimming pools and games of frisbee, enjoying warm nights on the patio and having friends over for backyard barbecues. Full-timers also get to enjoy the same past-times -- the only difference is that they don't have to clean the pool or mow the lawn, but they are required to tote their supplies with them from place to place.

A Long Way From Who We Were In High School

Matt and I just went back to Naples for our 20th high school reunion. It's fair to say that, as full-time RVers, we're living an entirely different life from the rest of our classmates. In the back of my mind, I already knew that we had taken the road less-traveled (or to be more accurate, that we had swerved violently off the main highway at that last fork!) But I didn't realize exactly how unusual our life choices were until we met up with the BCHS class of 1989...

Leaving Your Rig When You Fly Out Of Town

My husband and I are flying to Florida today for our 20th high school reunion -- and a lot of people have asked us what we do with our Airstream, our cats, and all of our stuff while we are out of town. Let me share...

Overnight Guests In 200-Square Feet

We're spending a few weeks visiting my mother -- and it makes me think back to the time when she traveled with us to Orlando in the Airstream for a long weekend at Disney. I love my mother dearly, but when you live in a 29-foot travel trailer, three really starts to be a crowd fast!

Camping Discount Clubs -- Can You Really Save Money?

Once Matt and I decided to become full-timers, we joined a number of camping discount clubs -- assuming that we would be getting deep discounts on every stay at every RV park across the country. It hasn't quite worked out that way -- so I'm here to give you the skinny on each programs.

Know What You're Parking Next To

When Matt and I embarked on the full-timing lifestyle, we knew that we would have both more and less control over our "neighborhood" -- the freedom to go anywhere we wanted at any time, but often a limited number of options in terms of the RV parks available to us. And we've learned some lessons along the way about knowing what you're parked next to...

Squished Pennies -- The Perfect Full-Timing Souvenir

As full-time RVers, we love to travel -- but we just don't have room for the typical souvenirs most people bring home. God bless pressed pennies -- they serve my need for a tangible representation of my memories, but my entire collection fits into a single ring binder.
