Tips For Internet Safety And Security

You Are Here:   Home > Organize And Simplify > Organizing Tip Sheets > Entry

I know that I've been gone for a while -- my mother passed away on June 6th, and I've been absolutely overwhelmed dealing with everything. I'm just about ready to return to my normal life, and that means that my blogs will be returning too. I look forward to reconnecting with my site visitors -- keep an eye out for me in late September!

The internet is a wonderful tool, but it's also filled with dangers -- people who want to take advantage of your kids, steal your identity, or infect your computer with a virus. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to avoid these pitfalls -- to protect yourself, your family, and your equipment.

Don't Trust Everything You See

  • know that the internet is filled with inaccurate information
  • investigate the person's or company's affiliations and credentials
  • check references and sources on any facts
  • see when the item was posted or last updated
  • confirm any web information through a separate reliable source

Kids And The Internet

  • don't allow children to use the internet without supervision
  • monitor where your children spend time on the internet
  • be aware that child molesters use internet to gain kids' confidence
  • warn your child not to give out personal information on the web
  • don't let them meet with anyone they met on the web
  • use internet blocking programs to stop adult content

Protecting Your Interests

  • never give your password to anyone for any reason
  • be cautious about giving out personal information
  • make your password hard to guess
  • change your password regularly
  • use a mix of numbers and letters in your password
  • protect your computer with a firewall and virus software
  • don't open any email attachments from people you don't know

Shopping On The Web

  • visit www.internic.net to see who owns the site
  • check out web companies with the Better Business Bureau
  • don't give out credit card number unless site is secure
  • secure site will have "lock" symbol at bottom of page
  • don't give personal info unless a reputable company
  • look for the company's return policy before ordering
  • file any complaints with the Better Business Bureau
