Fringe reviews are the theatrical equivalent of Yelp posts — written by audience members (NOT professional critics) who want to generously share their impressions with other real-life theater-goers. Since they’re on the short side (compared to the rambling dissertations penned by most paid reviewers), I thought I’d moosh them all together into one page. Feasting…

For my third-ever theatrical production, I was asked to participate in a live old-timey radio drama. (Yes, I know the title makes it seem like porn. But the “going down” part refers to a tragic historic plane crash — not public acts of fellatio. I promise.) The writer/director (a friend from Ghosts Of The Underground…

On its most visceral level, the power of good theater, as with all great art, lies in its capacity to take us by surprise. Obversely, to see it coming — whether it’s a standup’s punch line, a magician’s misdirection, an actor’s line delivery or a playwright’s choice and ordering of the words — is a…

Truly an engaging piece of drama, performance art, and macabre (done with style, mystery, and rich characters) — this enticing production can only be found at the wonderfully inventive and original theatre company known as Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group in North Hollywood. Ghosts Of The Underground is a fresh twist on the unexpected and…

Halfway through Ghosts Of The Underground’s opening night, I had the strongest sense of deja vu. Not simply because I recognized about half the cast, nor because I’ve attended many a show at Zombie Joe’s. No, my imagination summoned up a series of silent movies. Doctor Mabuse, Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and M….

Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre has been experimenting of late. Starting last year they, began experimenting with removing the stage, removing the chairs, and pushing the bounds of where their theatre starts and ends. Each time ZJU pushes the boundary of their stage to include the entire theatre, they deliver a more powerful performance than the…

Anyone who’s ever participated in community theater understands that it’s a DIY activity. Most companies don’t have extra cash for costumes or props or set dressing — so actors end up contributing supplies to the production. I’d made my own outfit for Manicomio, and expected to have to do the same this second time around….

Zombie Joe’s Underground has long been L.A.’s premier stage purveyor of psychological horror. The theater’s signature production, Urban Death (whose current incarnation closes May 31), remains a viscerally potent iteration of the subgenre’s first tenet — that which is unseen is far more spine-chilling than that which is visible in the light of day. Manicomio,…

“Manicomio” is Spanish for “insane asylum.” No one told me that before seeing the play of that title, the latest offering from Zombie Joe’s in North Hollywood. Methinks folks were having a tiny bit of fun at my expense. In fact, it probably soured my mood ever so slightly towards the work. When a title…
